Welcome to 1971 Archive

“Genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national/ ethnical/ racial or religious group. as such: (a) Killing members of the group (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group".

[The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide,United Nations General Assembly on 9 December 1948 as General Assembly Resolution 260]

Though United Nations has not recognized yet but journalist’s report, victims and witness statements, refugee reports and investigations by the International Committee of Jurists in 1972- all indicate that a clear genocide was committed in Bangladesh in 1971.

The perpetrator were Pakistan Army and their auxiliary forces such as Razakar, Al Badar, Al Shams. These militant groups were mostly formed by members of Jamat-e-Islam and Bihari’s who migrated in Bangladesh from India during the India-Pakistan partition in 1947. Intention was obvious to destroy the “Bangali” national and ethnical identity.

This archive is an initiative to collect and digitally preserve those harrowing tales of suffering and survival from “Genocide 1971”
